Influences On Canadian Culture

We are learning about how different cultures have helped to shape our Canadian culture. One of the major influences would be the First Nations People who helped the very first settlers to survive. We invited Richelle North Star Scott to share some of her culture with us. She taught us the Buffalo People Calling Song. The students learned it much easier that Mrs. Hauta!

From Mrs. Havixbeck we learned about the voyageurs who travelled into the interior of the Canadian wilderness to trap for furs. She taught us about the need to portage. She taught us how to leg wrestle! It was a lot of fun!

First you have to line up shoulder to hip!

Then on the count of 3 you raise your inside leg up.
You do this three times in a row.

Then the last time you raise your leg you hook it around your opponent and try to pull them forward.
The goal? You want to make them flip right over!

Everyone wanted to have a try, of course!

We are reading Dear Canada's Footsteps in the Snow, The Red River Diary of Isobel Scott. It is a fictional story based on actual facts about a family who emigrated to Canada from Scotland. The story tells of how new immigrants braved the new land and learned to survive with a lot of help from some of the locals.

The best thing about reading a dairy account is that it can easily fit into any time frame.

Learning to Measure

Measuring things is not as easy as it looks. You have to make sure you start on the edge of the object or line. You can use anything to measure with, but you have to make sure it is end-to-end or the measurement will not be accurate. Grade 2 students must explore the use of non-standard measurements, so the Grade 3's get a little more practice.

Everyone likes to get a turn. We compare all the measurements and the tools. We talk about which tools are easier to use.

Terry Fox Run!

We watched a video about Terry Fox and his goal to raise money for cancer. We learned about how brave he was and that he was just a boy in school like us. We will never forget his courage, and that is why we run for Terry!

Welcome Back!

It's great to be back!

We have been working hard to get back into routines. Routines make our daily work that much easier to do. We have been making new friends, and learning a little about each other's cultures.

We have been practising our fire drills to make sure we can safely exit the building in the event of a fire.

We are participating in the Global Read Aloud. The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible.

Why?  Global collaboration is necessary to show students that they are part of something bigger than them. That the world needs to be protected and that we need to care for all people. You can show them pictures of kids in other countries but why not have them speak to each other? Then the caring can begin.

We are reading the BFG by Roald Dahl.

We were quite relieved that the giant didn't eat Sophie!

Today we were learning about Bus Ridership, thanks to Bus Driver Bob!

Global School Play Day

This was the first time we participated in the global school play day. Students were told they could bring anything they wanted to play with from home as long as it didn't have batteries. Students had a great time. Here are some of the things they did!

These were some of the comments the students made at the end of the day:

"I forgot we were at school!"

"Playing with others helps you to make friends."

"Playing is more fun with others."

"It was a nice feeling to share your toys with someone."

Fresh Snow!

Fresh Snow means that the snow plows will be adding snow to our playground. More snow on the playground means BIGGER hills. And BIGGER hills means MORE FUN!

We are using our new snow
saucers! They were a lot of fun!

We also had fun with the large
ice blocks that the snowplows created by using them to make
snow forts!
Here is some of our hard work!
